Practice Makes Perfect. Sometimes.

Practice makes perfect. Sometimes.

Some use “passion” as a reason to keep taking shots when they constantly miss. But passion can often just be pride made to sound endearing. Then all that effort to not be bad at one thing just becomes a distraction from being great at another. As a creative, this plays out over the line between fighting for a great idea and being an asshole. It means constantly refining your sense of what’s objectively good work and what’s just your ego playing gaurd.

Synthetic Nostalgia

I was born in Palm Desert, California. 30 years later I realized I was born in Van Nuys–I’m a Valley Girl, not a Desert Punk. Aside from the potential perjury checking those “You Confirm This Information Is Accurate” boxes, I was defining a piece of my current self with a sand-blasted nostalgia I had like, totally fabricated. It revealed memory isn't a reliable way to frame who you are. The same can be said for a portfolio. Approaching new work through the lens of your past projects limits what you're capable of now. So I could brag about when I created campaigns for Lyft and New Balance. I could impress you with my broad skillset, explaining how I led a team to win the ADCD Paper Fashion Show but maybe those projects weren't even real. Maybe they were only great in context. Maybe I need to up the Ginkgo Biloba.

That dress did happen and it was the most absurd 700 watt Arduino Powered LED dress ever to grace Denver’s Performing Arts Complex. Here's a peek that doesn't show off any of those things.

THIS HEADLINE TOOK 8 HOURS TO MAKE

Had I made it from skratch. Fortunately, this guy Tyler already made a rad hand-lettered font so it only took a few seconds. Deciding when to agonize over craft and when to get things done is a difficult skill. It takes placing that pride we talked about earlier behind the bigger picture. A creative career isn't about what your hands make, it's about the the value they spread. Design, copy, craftsmanship are just tools for pursuing entrepreneurial endeavors, helping fellow humans and imparting platitudes.

Disclaimer: If you're just starting your creative career, focus on the making.

Cats Are Cute In Theory

Cats Are Cute In Theory

You know how everyone loves cats? Yeah, they’re adorable. Then you take one home. Your clothing becomes more fur than cloth. Friends assume you spend your nights battling bramble patches. Dinner parties become health code violations. And when you want the good stuff–cuddle time–they disappear. This shouldn't apply to your work. A bunch of fuzzy ideas, without a lot of foresight for how to make them real–or if they even should be. Deciphering a plausible solution from a litter of fluff is a craft worth honing. When the best strategy for realizing that loveable idea is to make it someone else’s problem, maybe it should stay in the bag.

TL;DR

Expected a curated portfolio? Picture of a smug designer? All you'll find here are run-on anectotes. You get to know a bit about how I think, I get to save precious effort fretting over pixels. Need to see the goods? My email is at the bottom of the page, next to my headshot.

Don't let pride distract you from doing things you're actually good at.

Defining yourself by your memories is spotty at best.

Wisely choose when to show off your skills, and when to get shit done.

Be strategic in choosing ideas. The best ones are the ones you can finish.
